Driving from Malappuram to Ooty

When you come from Malappuram and South Kerala side, Ooty Hills can be accessed from Nilambur town and Vazhikkadavu border village.  After several tedious hairpin bends, you reach Nadukani Junction.  Taking a left from here takes you Wayanad Hills and the right is the right road for you to Ooty.  There are no good eateries in Nadukani and better avoid the dirty stalls available there.  After the Tamil Nadu forest checkpost, you can see the Tantea Government Estate.  There is a junior college and a Devi shrine here.  You come across little villages like Irimbupalam, Amakkulam, Kozhippalam.  When you enter Gudalur the first landmarks are a Muslim cemetery, a shady temple and the Chembala Tea Factory.  Four Squire Restaurant, Hyrana Tourist Home and the Narthaki Wedding Hall invites you to Gudalur town.  There is a small church here called ‘Infant jesus shrine’ and another mosque called Gudalur Juma Masjidh.  Very soon you can see the famous T-junction of Gudalur with a Gandhi statue and an impossible signal waiting queue.  The green signal rightwards takes you to Ooty and the green signal leftwards takes you Mysore and Bangalore.
BY BUS
If the driving exhausted your energies, you can think of riding in a comfortable bus for the next family trip.  Kerala Provincial Government has the 'Malappuram Ooty SuperFast' starting by 10.55 am from Malappuram KSRTC bus station.  It arrives Ooty sharp 4.00 pm after a five hour journey.  They charge Rs.118.00 per head.  You can spend one or two days in Ooty and return by the same facility.  It starts from Ooty government bus station near the railway station by 4.30 pm in the evening and arrives by 10.00 pm in the night.  Malappuram is a safe and conservative Muslim and there are many high quality lodges here in Rs.800.00 range.  Cheaper options are also available.

Hillfort Hotel near KSRTC charges Rs.500, Maliyekkal Tourist Home at Uphill charges Rs.400, and Souparnika Inn, Punnathala charges Rs.1,000.  There is a Swagath Inn at Valanchery Town charging Rs.1,000.
